Observational rant - escaping from reality

Today I decided to do something that I have not done in months (or maybe even a year) - brave the shopping mall in order to buy a white polo shirt. Suffice to say that I could not find said white polo shirt (which was absolutely ridiculous), but being in that sort of chaotic environment hit me with a few home truths:

  1. I hate have an aversion to crowded places. I walked into Zara, it was packed with people buying a crap load of clothes, tried to navigate my way to the back through the throngs of people and ended up giving up and turning around and walking straight out. It actually started to make me feel anxious and a bit sick. The same thing applied with Uniqlo and H&M... although at H&M I ended up making a purchase for a nice warm sports jacket which was actually something I really needed.
  2. The "herd" mentality is astonishing. Whether it is in nabbing 10+ items of clothes just because "you can", whether it is lining up in a ridiculously long line for the latest food fad (doughnuts), wearing "active gear" even though you clearly have not just come from (or are going to) the gym or constantly being "on line" and looking at your mobile phone (snapchatting, playing Pokemon Go, Facebook, etc)... need I say more? To me it seems so robotic and void of reason.
  3. The rise of technology has led to a real escapism of reality - which unfortunately, is incredibly sad. As I was walking home through the park, noticed a couple sitting on the grass (which actually is a fantastic way of spending a sunny afternoon), but instead of face to face talking to each other, they were both on their mobile phones. As I continued walking, I saw groups of couples, or a small group of friends, or individuals, hanging around a certain area of the park looking down at their mobile phones and not moving (apart from the occasional swipe). So me being somewhat curious (and dreading the fact that I perhaps knew exactly what they were doing and hoping they were not), I sidled up close to one of these individuals and lo and behold, they were playing that stupid Pokemon Go game. Are you SERIOUS?! Sure having a bit of fun and playing games are fine, but you know, standing in the middle of a gorgeous park, completely ignoring the beauty that surrounds you and constantly staring at your phone just to catch a stupid Pokemon is just ridiculous. Not to mention there was no awareness of the fact that they were blocking the path of those who actually needed to go through the park... it actually began to piss me off.
Have we now come so far that we need to rely on technology to keep ourselves entertained? I also get annoyed by those who walk and are constantly on their phones with, once again, no awareness of oncoming traffic or the fact that they themselves are slowing down the traffic. Every time I walk to and from work I deliberately do not message people on my phone or use it to check out what's on Facebook or Instagram because I don't want to be one of those people who piss others off from their lack of awareness (or consideration).

Get with the times people! Stop and smell the roses (literally), look up at the incredible sky, look into the eyes of the people you love and have a proper conversation with them. How about observing what is going on around the world and trying to make a change? What I do like about H&M is their line of conscious clothing. At the institute where I study there is also a big emphasis on doing right by the environment (e.g. ensuring we have environmentally friendly cleaning products, etc etc). Why can't we put more emphasis on these sorts of issues rather than whether you can catch Pikachu in the middle of Sydney????
